Face the person rather than your screen, speak to them rather than to the phone, and pause after each sentence. Offering a stranger a used earbud is awkward and unhygienic, so a phone speaker or split screen is usually better. Limits. Apps do not replace a professional interpreter in medical, legal or police situations, where many places can provide one. Learning a few polite phrases in the local language still changes how conversations go.

Questions about consent to recording and about the privacy of audio processed in the cloud will stay relevant. For high-stakes conversations, professional interpreters are likely to remain the standard.
