In the United States, the TAKE IT DOWN Act of 2025 makes knowingly publishing such images a federal crime and requires platforms to remove them within 48 hours of a valid request. Knowing the laws, takedown routes and support services helps victims act quickly and helps others avoid causing harm.

Ime miri emi

Tools that swap faces or "undress" photos have made it simple to produce realistic intimate images of anyone with a few public photos. Victims include public figures, but also students, coworkers and former partners. The harm is real even though the image is fake: harassment, extortion, reputational and professional damage, and severe distress. In the United States, the TAKE IT DOWN Act was signed into law on May 19, 2025. It makes it a federal crime to knowingly publish non-consensual intimate imagery, explicitly including AI-generated "digital forgeries," and to threaten to publish it. Covered platforms had one year, until May 2026, to set up a notice-and-removal process, and must remove reported images within 48 hours of a valid request, making reasonable efforts to remove identical copies. The Federal Trade Commission enforces the platform duties. Civil liberties groups raised concerns that the takedown system could be misused to remove lawful content. Nearly every US state also has a law on non-consensual intimate images, and many have updated them to cover deepfakes. AI-generated sexual imagery of minors can be prosecuted under child sexual abuse material laws. Outside the US, the UK made sharing intimate deepfakes an offense under the Online Safety Act 2023 and has since legislated against creating them. A 2024 EU directive on violence against women requires member states to criminalize producing or sharing such images. Support resources include StopNCII.org for adults, NCMEC's Take It Down service for images taken of someone under 18, the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative's crisis helpline in the US, the Revenge Porn Helpline in the UK, and search engine removal forms. A common misconception is that nothing can be done because the image is fake. Many laws now specifically cover synthetic images, and platforms prohibit them. Another is that victims must share the image to get help; hashing services avoid that.

The Future of Non-Consensual AI Imagery: Laws and Protections

Legal protections are expanding: more jurisdictions are criminalizing creation as well as sharing, and platforms face explicit removal deadlines. Open questions include how regulators will enforce the new duties, how to prevent abuse of takedown systems, and how to reach nudify apps hosted in other countries. Technical measures such as content provenance labels, safeguards in image generators and app store policies may reduce easy access, but determined misuse of open models will persist. Education about consent, fast reporting and support for victims will remain central.

A college student finds a fake explicit image of herself on a social platform, saves the URL and screenshots with dates, and files a removal request, which platforms covered by the TAKE IT DOWN Act must act on within 48 hours.

An adult worried that an intimate or AI-altered image might spread uses StopNCII.org to create a hash on her own device, so partner platforms can block matching uploads without her ever sharing the image.

A parent learns classmates made fake nude images of their 15-year-old using a nudify app, does not save or forward the images, and reports them to NCMEC's CyberTipline and the school.

A man whose AI-generated explicit image shows up in search results uses Google's request form for removing non-consensual explicit imagery, including synthetic images, from search.

What is Non-Consensual AI Imagery: Laws and Protections?

Non-consensual AI imagery means sexual or intimate images of a real person created or altered with AI without their consent, often called deepfake nudes. In the United States, the TAKE IT DOWN Act of 2025 makes knowingly publishing such images a federal crime and requires platforms to remove them within 48 hours of a valid request. Knowing the laws, takedown routes and support services helps victims act quickly and helps others avoid causing harm.

Under the TAKE IT DOWN Act, how quickly must covered platforms remove reported images after a valid request?

The law requires removal within 48 hours of a valid request, along with reasonable efforts to remove identical copies.

Does the TAKE IT DOWN Act cover AI-generated images?

The Act specifically covers AI-generated or altered intimate images, which it calls digital forgeries.

Which agency enforces the platform duties in the TAKE IT DOWN Act?

The FTC enforces the requirement that covered platforms set up and follow a notice-and-removal process.

How does StopNCII.org protect a victim's privacy?

Only the perceptual hash leaves the device. Partner platforms compare it with uploads without seeing the original image.

If a parent discovers AI-generated nude images of their child, what does the guide advise?

Possessing or distributing sexual images of minors can itself be illegal, so reporting directly lets authorities handle the evidence.
