Digital citizenship includes how people find information, protect privacy, treat others and participate in online communities. AI changes these responsibilities because synthetic text, images, audio and video can be created quickly and may look convincing. A responsible digital citizen asks not only “Can I post this?” but “Is it accurate, fair to the people shown, safe to share and clear about how it was made?” Teach a repeatable source-checking routine. Pause before sharing, locate the original source, check date and context, compare the claim with independent reliable sources, and distinguish evidence from a caption or generated summary. A realistic image or voice recording is not proof of authenticity. Students should be especially cautious with urgent claims, impersonation and synthetic media about real people. Privacy applies to prompts and uploads as well as public posts. Avoid entering passwords, private messages, personal identifiers or identifiable images of classmates into unapproved services. For school tools, educators should check the district’s approved list, data practices, retention and deletion options. In the United States, COPPA applies to certain online services collecting personal information from children under 13; FTC guidance says schools’ ability to consent on a family’s behalf is limited to educational use and not a provider’s separate commercial purpose. Rules vary by context, so families and schools should consult current policies. Digital citizenship also includes inclusion and accountability. Consider consent before sharing another person’s image or voice, label AI-generated or edited media when context requires it, credit sources and correct harmful mistakes. The ISTE DigCit competencies emphasize informed, inclusive, engaged, alert and balanced participation. These ideas help students move beyond “don’t use technology” toward making thoughtful choices and contributing positively to their communities.

The Future of Digital Citizenship in the AI Era
Digital citizenship will continue to evolve as synthetic media, recommendation systems and AI assistants become part of ordinary school and social life. Students will need adaptable habits: verify before sharing, protect other people’s data, understand who benefits from a platform and speak up when content causes harm. Schools can model these practices in authentic assignments and update policies when tools change. The aim is not perfect detection of every fake, but thoughtful participation, clear accountability and the confidence to pause when evidence is uncertain.
Dhaqangelinta Adduunka-dhabta ah
A student sees a realistic voice clip online, checks the original source and corroborates the claim before sharing it.
A class reviews an AI app’s data practices and decides not to upload names or identifiable photos without approval.
A student labels an AI-generated image in a presentation and credits the sources used to build the argument.
A group discusses how recommendation systems shape what they see and intentionally seeks credible perspectives beyond the feed.

What is Digital Citizenship in the AI Era?
Digital citizenship in the AI era means using online and AI tools in ways that are informed, safe, inclusive and responsible to others. Students need skills to check media, protect personal information, disclose synthetic content where appropriate and consider how their digital actions affect people and communities.
A student receives a realistic audio clip making an urgent claim about a classmate. What should happen before sharing it?
Plausible audio can be synthetic or misleading; source checks and corroboration matter.
A student wants to use a classmate’s identifiable photo in a public AI image tool. What should they consider?
Identifiable images involve another person’s privacy and should not be uploaded without appropriate approval.
What does a media-check routine ask students to do?
Source tracing, context and corroboration help evaluate a claim.
An AI-generated image appears in a class presentation. What practice supports transparency?
Clear context and source credit help audiences understand how media was produced.
What limitation applies to provenance metadata on a media file?
Metadata can be useful, but does not provide complete or universal provenance.
