How to Write Better Dialogue with AI

AI can help a screenwriter brainstorm premises, test scene order, check a draft’s format or flag continuity questions, but the writer should create and revise the scenes, action and dialogue.
Screenplay conventions and submission rules depend on the project, buyer or competition. Writers working under the Writers Guild of America’s Minimum Basic Agreement should check its current AI provisions; those contract rules do not apply automatically to every writer.
A screenplay communicates scenes, visible action and dialogue to collaborators. It is not a novel with character thoughts pasted into dialogue. Start with a premise, protagonist, conflict and visual actions; then decide whether an outline or beat sheet will help organize scenes. Check the actual recipient’s requirements because submission materials vary by buyer, project and competition. AI can brainstorm alternatives, summarize scenes, highlight repeated exposition or flag continuity questions. It can also introduce plot facts, change who knows what, flatten character voices or use a format that does not fit the submission. Give it a concise story bible that separates fixed facts from tentative ideas. Ask it to identify possible issues for your review rather than silently rewrite pages. You remain responsible for the character choices, action, tone, pacing and images in the script. Formatting helps readers follow the work, but there is no universal page-count rule for every screenplay or contest. Follow the current call or buyer template. Review scene headings, action description, dialogue and transitions in the exported file; check that time, place and action are clear without explanatory prose. A format checker can catch presentation problems, but it cannot establish that the story works. The Writers Guild of America’s Minimum Basic Agreement has AI provisions for covered work. The WGA says AI is not a writer under the agreement, and its 2026 MBA summary says protections negotiated in 2023 remain in place. For covered writing services, a company cannot require AI use. Optional use requires company consent and compliance with applicable policies. These terms do not govern every writer or project. If the work may be covered, consult the current agreement and a qualified representative. For contests and publishers, read their current AI, originality and formatting rules before submitting.

Screenwriting tools may improve at comparing scenes, generating production breakdowns and tracking revisions. They will still need reliable story context and human review so invented details do not become script facts. Guild agreements, employer rules and contest policies can change, so check the current terms for each project. Production teams may also adopt new file and collaboration workflows as software develops. Keep exported copies versioned and labeled. The writer remains responsible for dramatic choices, visual storytelling and everything that appears on the page.
A writer asks AI to compare two possible scene orders against an outline, then keeps the version that better supports the protagonist’s choices.
A screenwriter uses a tool to flag inconsistent character knowledge across scenes, then checks the draft and corrects only verified continuity errors.
A writer formatting a script checks the recipient’s current instructions for scene headings, title page, file type and length instead of assuming every competition uses one template.
A WGA-covered writer checks current Guild guidance before using AI in covered services or responding to company-supplied AI-generated material.

Format and length requirements vary by recipient; use the specific, current call.
An automated flag is a prompt to inspect the manuscript, not proof of an error.
WGA AI rules described in its MBA apply to covered employment and have specific terms; not every writer is covered.
