Огляд

Much commercial work has moved from translating from scratch to machine translation post-editing (MTPE), and high-stakes, creative and accountable work remains in human hands. This matters for anyone considering the career, hiring translators or relying on machine output, because fluent-sounding machine translation can still carry serious errors.

Глибоке занурення

Machine translation has gone through three broad stages: rule-based systems, statistical systems that dominated the 2000s, and neural machine translation. Neural systems went mainstream around 2016, when Google moved Google Translate to its neural system. DeepL followed in 2017. Large language models are now also used for translation and can take instructions about tone, audience and terminology. The biggest change to the profession is machine translation post-editing. Instead of translating from scratch, a linguist corrects machine output. Light post-editing aims for understandable, accurate text. Full post-editing aims for quality comparable to human translation. The international standard ISO 18587, published in 2017, sets out requirements for full post-editing. Post-editing is often paid at lower rates than translation, and many translators report pressure on prices and less satisfying work. Some content, such as internal documents or large volumes of user reviews, is now machine translated with no human at all. Some work stays human for clear reasons. Certified or sworn translations need a person who takes legal responsibility. Medical, legal and safety-critical content carries high costs for errors. Literary translation and marketing transcreation depend on voice and cultural judgment. Interpreting in courts and hospitals involves accountability and live human interaction, even as AI speech translation improves. Low-resource languages with little training data often get weaker machine output. The key misconception is that fluent output means accurate output. Neural systems produce smooth text that can hide omissions, reversed negations, wrong numbers or inconsistent terminology. A reader who doesn't know the source language may never notice. That is why professional review matters most exactly where errors are costly. Translators are adapting by specializing in a domain, building skills in terminology management and quality assurance, working as reviewers and evaluators of machine output, moving into localization project and engineering roles, or offering transcreation and consulting.

The Future of AI and the Future of Translator Careers

Machine translation quality will likely keep improving, especially for widely used language pairs and general content, so pressure on routine commercial translation rates may continue. Demand for accountable, specialized and creative work seems more durable, but the size of that market is uncertain. Regulation and professional standards for certified translation, healthcare communication and AI disclosure could strongly affect where human review stays required. Translators who combine domain expertise, quality evaluation skills and fluency with AI tools will probably be better placed than those competing on volume. Anyone entering the field should expect a hybrid career rather than a traditional one.

Реалізація в реальному світі

A software company sends user-interface strings through machine translation inside a CAT tool. A professional linguist does full post-editing so terminology matches the product glossary.

A family needs a birth certificate translated for an immigration application. The authority requires a certified translation signed by a human translator who attests to its accuracy.

A publisher hires a literary translator for a novel because voice, wordplay and cultural references need creative judgment rather than word-level accuracy.

A global brand hires a transcreation specialist to adapt a slogan for a new market. Several literal machine translations were grammatical but lost the pun and carried an unintended meaning.

What is AI and the Future of Translator Careers?

AI has not replaced translators wholesale, but it has changed the profession. Much commercial work has moved from translating from scratch to machine translation post-editing (MTPE), and high-stakes, creative and accountable work remains in human hands. This matters for anyone considering the career, hiring translators or relying on machine output, because fluent-sounding machine translation can still carry serious errors.

What does machine translation post-editing (MTPE) involve?

MTPE means a human reviews and corrects machine output. It has become a major share of commercial translation work.

How does light post-editing differ from full post-editing?

The two levels target different quality bars. Full post-editing is the one addressed by ISO 18587.

What does ISO 18587 (2017) cover?

ISO 18587 is the international standard setting requirements for full human post-editing of machine translation.

Why is the fluency of neural machine translation a risk?

Fluent output looks trustworthy even when meaning is wrong, especially to readers who can't check the source.

What does the BLEU metric measure?

BLEU scores overlapping word sequences against a reference. Neural metrics such as COMET tend to track human judgments more closely.
