Yara says Birkeland entered commercial operation in 2022 and was transitioning gradually toward autonomous sailing. This is distinct from a claim that it operated without people from launch. MASS stands for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships. The IMO announced adoption of a non-mandatory MASS Code on 22 May 2026, with effect from 1 July 2026. The Code provides a framework for remotely controlled and autonomous ships; its non-mandatory status should not be confused with a binding international treaty already in force.
