It predicts pointmaps and confidence maps, then uses global alignment for multiple views. Its outputs are estimates whose accuracy depends on image overlap, scene content, and downstream alignment.
DUSt3R (Wang et al., 2024) reframes dense stereo reconstruction as pairwise pointmap regression. Given two images, it predicts a 3D coordinate for each pixel, expressing both pointmaps in the first image’s coordinate frame, along with per-pixel confidence maps. It does not require camera calibration or viewpoint poses as input. For more than two images, a global-alignment procedure brings pairwise pointmaps into a common reference frame; camera parameters and pixel matches can then be recovered from the aligned geometry. MASt3R builds on the framework with an added dense image-matching approach.
Estimating dense 3D points from a pair of uncalibrated photographs
Recovering relative camera poses and pixel correspondences from pointmap predictions with downstream alignment
Combining pairwise reconstructions into a shared coordinate frame for a multi-image scene
Using confidence maps to weight or filter uncertain predicted 3D points
DUSt3R and MASt3R illustrate how learned pointmaps can support several geometric-vision tasks from image pairs. Open questions include robustness to weak overlap, repeated textures, dynamic scenes, and larger image collections. Downstream systems should validate recovered scale, alignment, and camera estimates for their intended use.

DUSt3R predicts pointmaps first; camera estimates and matches can be recovered from the geometry through downstream processing and alignment.
За множество изгледи DUSt3R изпълнява глобално подравняване, което обединява всички двойки точкови карти в един последователен облак от точки.
