FastText extends Skip-Gram word representations with character n-gram features.

The subword representation allows a vector to be composed for a token absent from the training vocabulary when its character pieces are available.
Bojanowski et al. describe a Skip-Gram model in which a word is represented as the sum of vectors for its character n-grams, including the whole word. N-grams are hashed to a bucket table. Shared subword parameters allow the model to construct a representation for a word not observed as a whole token, subject to its available character pieces. The paper evaluates the approach on named tasks and languages; its results do not imply that every unknown word receives a reliable meaning. The official fastText repository also documents a supervised classifier, a distinct feature from the paper’s word-vector model.
Paper concept: represent a word using its character n-grams plus the whole word.
Paper concept: hash n-grams into a fixed bucket table and sum their learned vectors.
Paper evaluation: subword information helps on the authors’ reported rare-word and morphology-sensitive tasks.
Official fastText project: provides separate word-vector and supervised text-classification functionality.
When evaluating subword representations, test rare and morphologically complex words from the target domain, and measure errors as well as coverage. Treat FastText, BPE, and WordPiece as distinct methods with their own papers and implementations; avoid inferring a lineage or current deployment prevalence from shared use of subword units.

FastText extends Skip-Gram word representations with character n-gram features. The subword representation allows a vector to be composed for a token absent from the training vocabulary when its character pieces are available.
