Sprach-KI-GUIDE
Proximal Policy Optimization is a policy-gradient method that limits policy updates using a clipped surrogate objective.

In language-model RLHF, reward and KL terms are part of a larger training setup.
PPO uses a probability ratio between the new and old policies and clips it around a specified range in the surrogate objective. In RLHF implementations, reward models, KL penalties, and a value function may be included. A value estimate supports advantage calculation; it is not itself the reward. Implementations differ, so details should be scoped to a method or system. PPO clipping limits the surrogate objective’s incentive for ratios outside a clipping interval; it does not guarantee bounded parameter updates. In standard on-policy PPO, recent trajectories come from the policy being optimized. DeepSeekMath introduced GRPO, which estimates relative advantages among groups of sampled outputs without a separate value critic; this is a method description, not a guarantee of zero drift.
Collect responses from the current policy for a batch of prompts.
Score responses with a learned reward model or task signal.
Track KL divergence from a reference policy during updates.
Compare PPO runs with a fixed evaluation and rollout budget.
PPO remains a general RL method with implementation tradeoffs. Evaluate compute, rollout quality, and policy behavior under the actual training configuration.

Proximal Policy Optimization is a policy-gradient method that limits policy updates using a clipped surrogate objective. In language-model RLHF, reward and KL terms are part of a larger training setup.
PPO clipping limits the policy-ratio incentive in its surrogate objective when the ratio moves outside the clipping interval. It discourages large policy changes in that objective, but does not mathematically guarantee bounded parameter updates.
