AI for the Skilled Trades
AI for the skilled trades means using AI assistants and the AI features in field-service software to handle the paperwork around the work: drafting quotes, finding code sections, scheduling jobs and writing customer messages.

For tradespeople, most of AI's value is in language work, not the physical job. General chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and the AI features added to field-service platforms like ServiceTitan, Jobber and Housecall Pro, can turn rough notes, voice memos and photos into estimates, job summaries, invoice descriptions and follow-up messages. For a one- or two-person shop where the owner does the books at night, that time saving is real. Quoting works best when you give the AI your own numbers. A model doesn't know your local material prices, labor rate, markup or how long a job takes you, so if you leave them out it fills the gaps with plausible guesses. A good approach is a saved template: your rates, standard line items and exclusions, plus the job notes. You still check every figure. Code lookups need the most care. Building codes are adopted and amended locally, and editions change. The National Electrical Code, for example, is revised every three years, and a jurisdiction may enforce an older edition with local amendments. A model can misquote section numbers, mix up editions or state a rule with confidence when it's wrong. Use AI to learn what a rule is about and where to look, then check the adopted code and, when in doubt, ask the inspector. The license holder is responsible for the work, not the software. A common misconception is that AI will soon replace electricians and plumbers. Hands-on trade work happens in unstructured places like crawlspaces, attics and old houses with undocumented wiring. The job depends on touch, sound, smell and judgment, and every site is different. Robots still struggle with this, a pattern often linked to Moravec's paradox: skills that are easy for people, like moving around in a messy space, are hard for machines. So AI mostly changes the office side of the trades, not the tools on the belt.

The Future of AI for the Skilled Trades
Expect AI features to keep spreading inside the software tradespeople already use: estimating, dispatch, voice-to-invoice and answering calls after hours. Code-lookup tools that cite the adopted edition could become more reliable as publishers license their texts, but jurisdiction-specific amendments will still need checking. Robotics may improve in structured settings such as prefabrication shops, but on-site diagnostic and installation work is likely to stay human-led for a long time. The most realistic change is fewer evenings spent on paperwork, not fewer tradespeople. Skilled trade shortages are also likely to make time-saving tools more attractive.

An electrician photographs a panel label, dictates notes on a service upgrade, and has an AI assistant turn them into an itemized quote with labor, materials and a plain-English scope. Then they check every price against their supplier's current list.
A plumber asks an assistant which code section covers minimum drain slope for a pipe size, then confirms the answer in the locally adopted plumbing code before relying on it.
A small HVAC company uses the scheduling assistant in its field-service software to group maintenance visits by neighborhood and keep buffer time open for emergency calls.
A contractor pastes an angry customer text about a delayed job into an assistant and gets a calm draft reply explaining the supply delay and the new date. They edit the tone and the facts before sending it.

What is AI for the Skilled Trades?
AI for the skilled trades means using AI assistants and the AI features in field-service software to handle the paperwork around the work: drafting quotes, finding code sections, scheduling jobs and writing customer messages. It matters because office work eats into billable hours, while the physical, judgment-heavy work on site is still very hard to automate.
According to the guide, where does most of AI's current value for tradespeople lie?
The guide says AI's value is mostly in the language work around the job, such as estimates, summaries, invoices and messages, not the physical work itself.
Why does an AI-generated quote need your own numbers in the prompt?
Without your prices and rates, the model fills in plausible guesses. Giving it your numbers grounds the draft.
Why are AI answers about building codes risky to rely on directly?
Jurisdictions adopt specific editions with local amendments, and models can confidently misquote or blend editions.
How often does the guide say the National Electrical Code is revised?
The NEC is revised on a three-year cycle, and a jurisdiction may still enforce an older edition.
What idea does the guide use to explain why robots struggle with on-site trade work?
Moravec's paradox describes how skills easy for humans, like moving through messy spaces, are hard for machines.
