심층 분석
In a typical virtual nursing model, experienced RNs work from a central hub or from home. They connect to patient rooms through a camera, microphone and speaker, often built into the room's TV or a wall-mounted unit, and they have full EHR access. The virtual nurse is part of the care team for a group of patients and takes on tasks that do not need hands. These include admission histories and assessments of history, medication reconciliation, discharge education and follow-up instructions, rounding check-ins, answering patient questions, mentoring less experienced nurses, and, where policy allows, serving as the second verifier for high-alert medications. Virtual nursing is different from two related models. Continuous virtual observation, or virtual sitting, uses trained observers who may not be nurses. They watch many patients at once for falls, elopement or line pulling. Tele-ICU uses remote critical care nurses and intensivists to monitor ICU patients and has been in use for about two decades. Mercy Virtual Care Center in Chesterfield, Missouri, opened in 2015 as a dedicated telehealth building with no patient beds, and it is often cited as an early large-scale example. AI appears in several places. Computer vision detects bed exits, falls and room entries. Worklists rank which patients the virtual nurse should see next. Deterioration models flag patients for a closer look, and ambient tools draft documentation. One misconception is that virtual nurses count toward bedside staffing. Most models are designed as extra support. When hospitals use them to justify higher bedside patient loads, nurses and unions object. A virtual nurse cannot turn a patient, start an IV or respond physically to an emergency. Patient privacy also needs care. Cameras are usually off or covered until activated, with a chime or indicator light when someone connects.

The Future of Virtual Nursing and AI Remote Monitoring
Many health systems are piloting or expanding virtual nursing, driven by workforce shortages and interest in supporting newer nurses. Published outcome evidence is still limited and mixed. Results depend on which tasks move to the virtual nurse and whether bedside workloads actually drop. Expect more AI features, such as ambient documentation and automated room monitoring, together with ongoing debate over staffing ratios, privacy and patient consent. The model most likely to last treats the virtual nurse as an added team member with defined tasks, not a substitute for staff at the bedside.
실제 구현
A virtual nurse completes a new patient's admission history, medication reconciliation and home medication questions over video while the bedside nurse starts the IV and gives first doses.
Before discharge, a remote nurse reviews new medications with the patient and a family member and uses teach-back until the patient can explain when to take each pill.
A new graduate nurse unsure about a wound assessment calls in the virtual nurse. The virtual nurse looks through the camera and walks her through documentation.
An AI camera system alerts a remote observer that a confused patient is pulling at a line. The observer speaks to the patient right away and calls the bedside nurse to the room.

자주 묻는 질문
What is Virtual Nursing and AI Remote Monitoring?
Virtual nursing is a care model in which experienced registered nurses work remotely through in-room cameras, speakers and EHR access. They support bedside staff with tasks such as admission histories, discharge teaching and patient monitoring, often with AI that detects movement or safety risks. It matters because it can take documentation and education work off bedside nurses, but it cannot replace hands-on care.
Which pair of tasks is most typical for a virtual nurse in the model the guide describes?
Virtual nurses take on work that does not need hands, such as admission histories, medication reconciliation and discharge teaching. Bedside nurses keep the physical tasks.
How does continuous virtual observation (virtual sitting) differ from virtual nursing?
Virtual sitting focuses on safety monitoring for falls, elopement or line pulling. Virtual nursing involves RN-level clinical tasks such as education and assessment.
What made Mercy Virtual Care Center notable, according to the guide?
Mercy Virtual Care Center in Chesterfield, Missouri, opened in 2015 as a telehealth hub without beds. It is often cited as an early large-scale example.
What licensure rule applies to a virtual nurse caring for a patient in another state?
Licensure follows the patient's location. The Nurse Licensure Compact lets nurses practice across member states under one multistate license.
What typically generates tasks on a virtual nurse's worklist?
ADT events and orders drive worklists. A new admission creates an admission-history task, and a discharge order creates an education task.
