Offering a stranger a used earbud is awkward and unhygienic, so a phone speaker or split screen is usually better. Limits. Apps do not replace a professional interpreter in medical, legal or police situations, where many places can provide one. Learning a few polite phrases in the local language still changes how conversations go.
