Plant-identification apps use image models to suggest likely species from a photo, often as a ranked list.
A result is a hypothesis to verify with a reliable regional source or expert, not a safety verdict; never eat, apply, or allow a child or pet to handle a plant based only on an AI match.
A photo app can compare visible leaves, flowers, fruit, and growth patterns with examples in its database. It may return several likely names and confidence scores, but the ranking can be wrong when a plant is immature, damaged, out of season, photographed from one angle, or missing from the database. Similar-looking species can have very different toxicity or edibility. A 2023 study tested plant-identification applications on toxic and edible plants in the American Midwest and found that identification performance varied; that result is specific to the apps, plants, and region tested, not a universal current accuracy estimate. Take photos of the entire plant and relevant details without touching unknown species. Compare candidates with a regional field guide, university extension, or qualified botanist. Do not consume a wild plant, make tea, or treat a rash based solely on an app. If a child or pet may have ingested a plant, contact poison control, a clinician, or a veterinarian promptly and preserve a photo or sample only if it is safe to do so. Avoid relying on the tool to determine whether a plant is safe around children or animals. AI can help generate candidates and questions, but identification depends on expert verification and local species knowledge. A close photo of only one leaf may omit features needed to distinguish related species. Include the surrounding growth form and season when possible, but do not handle a plant to obtain another view.

Plant-identification tools may broaden regional coverage and make it easier to compare alternative candidates or ask experts to review observations. Explanations of distinguishing traits could help users inspect leaves, flowers, fruit, and habitat more carefully. Those additions would not establish toxicity or edibility, and results would still depend on the image, plant stage, and local species. Verify candidates with regional botanical references. When an identification affects health or ingestion, consult poison-control professionals, a veterinarian, or a botanist rather than relying on a model label.

Image models suggest candidates; they do not confirm identity.
Missing features and similar-looking species can lead an image app to suggest the wrong plant.
Regional references and expert review provide additional evidence.
Visual identification alone is not enough to establish safety.
Possible ingestion needs qualified poison or medical guidance.
