Process-based assessment shifts part of the grade from the finished product to evidence of how it was made: a proposal, notes, an outline, one or more drafts, peer feedback, a revision and a short reflection. It was good teaching practice long before chatbots, because feedback on drafts improves writing, but it now doubles as the most useful authorship evidence a teacher has. Writing history is the digital trail. In Google Docs, File > Version history > See version history shows time-stamped versions and who made each edit. Students draft in phone notes, write offline in another app, or paste from their own earlier document. History is evidence to discuss, not a verdict. Two misconceptions cut in opposite directions. A single large paste does not prove misuse, and a clean, gradual history does not prove honesty, since someone could retype AI text by hand. Process evidence is strongest when combined with other checkpoints: in-class writing samples, a conversation about choices, and consistency across drafts. Detector scores compare poorly. They give a probability without showing their reasoning, they produce false positives, and a 2023 Stanford study found popular detectors often flagged essays by non-native English writers as AI-generated. Version history, by contrast, is something teacher and student can look at together and discuss.

The Future of Process-Based Assessment and Writing History
Authorship-tracking features are appearing in more writing platforms, and learning management systems are likely to integrate process evidence more tightly into submissions. That brings benefits and real questions: students may feel surveilled, and determined users can still retype generated text. Expect the most durable approach to be pedagogical rather than technical, with graded drafts, reflections and short conversations that make process part of learning. Schools will also need clear privacy policies about who can view writing history, for how long, and for what purpose, so that process evidence supports students rather than becoming another opaque score.
Real-World Implementation
A high school English teacher uses Google Classroom's option to make a copy of a template for each student, so every essay's version history is visible from the first keystroke.
A college instructor asks students to name versions at three checkpoints (outline, first draft, final) and grades a short reflection explaining the biggest change between them.
When a paper appears to have arrived in one large paste, a teacher replays its history with the Draftback extension, then asks the student about it, and learns they drafted on their phone during a commute.
A writing center asks students to submit revision notes showing how they responded to each piece of peer feedback, making the revision process part of the grade.
