A model alert or DNA detection supports follow-up investigation but does not alone confirm that a live pest is present at a specific location.
Pest and invasive-species screening can use labeled images or environmental DNA. The InsectNet paper studies deep-learning identification from citizen-science insect images and reports evaluation across more than 2,500 species, including harmful pests and beneficial insects. Its authors describe difficult cases such as look-alike species, varied life stages and imaging conditions, and report that the model can abstain when uncertain. The U.S. Geological Survey defines environmental DNA as genetic material shed into the environment by live or formerly live organisms; it can help detect species that are difficult to find through traditional sampling. A positive sample indicates that target genetic material was detected, not that a live organism is necessarily present at the exact sampling point. USDA ARS separately describes a project, starting in July 2026, to develop deep-learning plant classification from drone imagery for rangeland monitoring. These research examples are scoped to their published datasets and project plans; field observations and sampling design remain important for ecological interpretation.
InsectNet research uses citizen-science insect images to train a visual model that can identify pest and beneficial insect species.
An eDNA sample from water, soil, sediment or air can be analyzed for genetic material shed by live or formerly live organisms.
A USDA Agricultural Research Service project is developing drone-image models to map rangeland plant species and vegetation.
Researchers can compare image-based identifications with eDNA detections and field observations when studying a species distribution.
Further work can test image classifiers and eDNA assays across new locations, seasons and sampling conditions, and compare their detections with field observations. The USDA ARS project listed here is planned research rather than a completed or validated operational system. Claims about other sensors, species, or deployments should be checked against study-specific evidence.

AI can help screen insect images and environmental DNA samples for species of interest. A model alert or DNA detection supports follow-up investigation but does not alone confirm that a live pest is present at a specific location.
The study reports using a large citizen-science dataset of insect images to train its identification model.
The paper reports identification across more than 2,500 insect species, including harmful pests and beneficial insects.
The authors identify look-alike species, life-stage variation, backgrounds and imaging conditions as classification challenges.
An eDNA result indicates target genetic material in a sample; it does not by itself prove that a live organism is at that precise site.
The paper reports that the model can abstain when uncertain, enabling human intervention rather than forcing a potentially unreliable label.
