360 and Panoramic Image Generation
AI 360 and panoramic image generation creates full wraparound images, usually in the equirectangular format, that can be viewed from the inside as a sphere in a VR headset, a web viewer or a game engine skybox.

It matters because it lets small teams produce immersive backdrops and environment concepts in minutes. That only works when the generator handles the wraparound seam and the stretched poles correctly.

A 360-degree panorama is a picture of every direction as seen from one point. It is usually stored in equirectangular projection. That is a rectangle with a 2:1 aspect ratio: the horizontal axis covers 360 degrees of longitude and the vertical axis covers 180 degrees of latitude, like a flat world map. Viewer software wraps the rectangle back onto a sphere around the camera. This format causes two problems that ordinary image models are not trained to handle. The first is the seam. The left and right edges of the rectangle are the same place in the world, so the content has to continue perfectly across them. A normal generator treats the two edges as unrelated borders, and when the panorama is wrapped, a vertical line shows where they meet. The second problem is distortion. Near the top and bottom rows, a tiny area around each pole is stretched across the full width of the image. Straight lines curve there, and objects near the sky or floor smear or pinch. If a model paints what looks like a normal ceiling in that region, it turns into a warped mess once projected onto the sphere. Dedicated tools, such as Blockade Labs' Skybox AI, and custom workflows built on open models tackle both problems. They fine-tune models on real equirectangular images and use generation tricks that make the image wrap around horizontally. Results still often need upscaling and manual touch-ups at the poles. A common misconception is that a 360 image is a 3D world. It is not. It captures one viewpoint, so there is no parallax when you move your head and you cannot walk through it. In VR, panoramas therefore work best as distant backgrounds or for seated experiences. Another misconception is that any very wide image is a panorama. A wide landscape crop will not wrap correctly unless it was made to connect edge to edge.

The Future of 360 and Panoramic Image Generation
Research is moving past single panoramas toward full 3D scene generation, where a model produces geometry or Gaussian splats that let you move instead of looking from one fixed point. Many of those systems use a panorama as an intermediate step and lift it into 3D with depth estimation. Likely areas of progress are cleaner poles, resolutions high enough for headsets, and better HDR output for lighting. Practical questions are still open: how well generated scenes hold up up close, how studios handle licensing for generated environments, and whether one style can stay consistent across many linked scenes. For now, generated panoramas are most useful as concept art, backgrounds and prototypes, not as final hero environments.
Real-World imuse
An indie game developer generates a sunset desert skybox, converts it to a cubemap and uses it as the distant background in a game engine, while real 3D geometry covers everything the player can walk near.
An architecture studio produces concept 360 views of a proposed hotel lobby so clients can look around it in a headset before anyone builds a detailed 3D model.
A history teacher builds a virtual field trip viewer of a stylized ancient Roman forum and tells students clearly that it is an illustration, not an accurate archaeological reconstruction.
A VR meditation app designer generates several calm environments and checks each one by shifting the image half its width in an editor, which exposes any visible seam before the scenes ship.

What is 360 and Panoramic Image Generation?
AI 360 and panoramic image generation creates full wraparound images, usually in the equirectangular format, that can be viewed from the inside as a sphere in a VR headset, a web viewer or a game engine skybox. It matters because it lets small teams produce immersive backdrops and environment concepts in minutes. That only works when the generator handles the wraparound seam and the stretched poles correctly.
What aspect ratio does a standard equirectangular panorama use?
Equirectangular images are twice as wide as they are tall. The width covers 360 degrees of longitude and the height covers 180 degrees of latitude.
Why does an ordinary image generator often leave a visible seam in a panorama?
Once the image is wrapped onto a sphere, the left and right edges touch. A model that does not know they connect paints content that fails to line up where they meet.
Where is distortion strongest in an equirectangular image?
Near the poles, a very small area of the sphere is stretched across the full width of the image. Lines curve there and objects smear or pinch.
Why does a 360 panorama not feel fully 3D in a VR headset?
A panorama records every direction from one point only. Moving your head does not shift near objects against far ones, and you cannot walk through the scene.
What does circular (wraparound) padding do in a diffusion model?
Filling the padding with pixels from the opposite edge lets the convolutions see content continue across the boundary, so the edges are generated to match.
