Paraprofessionals can use approved AI tools to prepare materials, organize classroom routines, or rephrase teacher-approved directions under the supervising educator’s guidance.
They should not let a generated response set a student’s goals, disclose confidential information, or replace the role’s required training and human judgment.
Paraprofessionals and classroom aides support instruction, routines, communication, and student access. Their responsibilities vary by district, school, program, and student need. AI can help draft practice materials, translate a routine message, summarize teacher-provided directions, or generate variations of a classroom activity. The supervising teacher must verify that the material matches the lesson, student plan, and classroom expectations before it is used. Do not use a chatbot to make decisions that belong to the teacher, evaluation team, or qualified professional. A generated answer should not set an individualized education goal, interpret behavior as a diagnosis, change a support plan, or decide discipline. For students served under IDEA, federal regulations say states must establish qualifications for paraprofessionals and that appropriately trained and supervised paraprofessionals may assist in providing special education and related services under state law, regulation, or written policy. That is not a universal description of every school aide’s duties; follow district policy and the assigned supervisor’s direction. Protect student information. Use only district-approved tools and avoid entering names, records, IEP details, health information, or identifiable work into an unapproved service. Check accessibility, language, reading level, and factual content. If AI suggests something that conflicts with a student’s plan or a teacher instruction, pause and ask the supervising educator. Keep materials labeled as drafts until reviewed. A useful workflow gives aides time to learn the tool, a clear escalation path, and a non-AI alternative when the system is unavailable or unsuitable.

Schools may provide more approved tools for creating differentiated materials and supporting accessible communication. For aides, useful training should cover data handling, source checking, accessibility, and the limits of generated recommendations. Districts should clarify which tools are authorized, what student information may be used, and who reviews outputs. A tool can reduce preparation friction, but it should not expand a paraprofessional’s authority or turn a draft into an unreviewed decision. Role clarity and the supervising teacher’s review will remain central as products change.
Ask an approved tool to turn a teacher-provided lesson into a short practice checklist.
Draft several reading passages at a requested level, then have the teacher check accuracy and accessibility.
Use a generated visual schedule only after confirming it matches the student’s established routine.
Write a neutral observation note from specific events rather than model-generated interpretations.
