They can ease optimization of deep networks, but they do not guarantee that every gradient remains well behaved or that adding depth improves a task.
Highway networks, introduced in 2015, use learned transform and carry gates inspired by LSTM gating. A gate controls how much transformed input contributes and how much is carried forward. The original research demonstrated easier training of very deep networks in its evaluated settings. Residual networks use an additive shortcut, with a block computing F(x) + x when shapes permit. The shortcut provides a direct route alongside the learned transformation; the total gradient still depends on the full network and training configuration. U-Net uses encoder-to-decoder skip paths for spatial information, while DenseNet concatenates earlier feature maps. These are related ideas with different operations, not interchangeable architectures. Test the actual model rather than treating any shortcut as a universal solution.

Skip paths remain common in architectures such as transformers, diffusion U-Nets and convolutional networks. Research examines normalization, scaling and gated variants, but their benefit depends on the model and optimization setup. Claims should identify the actual shortcut operation and measured task rather than treating addition, concatenation and gating as the same mechanism. A useful comparison checks training stability, computation and generalization.

Shortcuts can mitigate optimization difficulties but are not universal guarantees.
