Meta AI appears in several Meta products, but its interface, availability, and teen controls may differ between Instagram and WhatsApp.
Parents should check the current settings in each app and distinguish the AI assistant from AI characters or other features.
Meta offers an AI assistant that people can access across products including Instagram and WhatsApp, but a feature shown in one app may not have the same controls in another. Meta’s product announcements describe the assistant and AI characters as related but distinct experiences. The name Meta AI does not mean every user sees the same entry point, model behavior, or settings. Availability can vary by location, account, app version, and rollout. Meta’s teen-safety update, last updated in April 2026, says teens could continue to access the Meta AI assistant with age-appropriate protections while access to existing AI characters was paused during development of a new experience. Meta’s July 2026 announcement describes a limited alert for parents using Instagram supervision when a teen’s Meta AI conversation may indicate self-harm risk; the company says flagged chats are manually reviewed before an alert. This is not a full transcript or a guarantee that every risk will be detected. The status and rollout may change, so check Meta’s current official information and the account’s own settings. Parents can ask which AI feature is involved, what data it uses, how to report a concerning answer, and how to switch or limit access in that specific app. Teach teens not to share passwords, financial details, private images, or sensitive information without understanding the service’s data practices. Encourage checking consequential answers with trusted people. AI responses can be wrong or inappropriate, and a parent setting does not replace conversation, supervision, or professional help when a teen needs support.

Meta continues updating teen protections and AI features across its apps. The company’s public notices may change as new assistant and character experiences roll out. Parents should revisit the current help page and check settings separately in Instagram and WhatsApp rather than rely on an older guide. Families can agree on boundaries for personal information, verification, and asking an adult for help. Product controls can support that conversation, but they cannot establish that every answer is safe or accurate for each account.
Check whether Meta AI is available in the teen’s Instagram or WhatsApp account and region.
Discuss what personal details a teen should avoid sharing in an AI conversation.
Review Instagram Teen Account supervision settings without assuming they apply to WhatsApp.
Ask a teen to verify important information with a trusted person or source.
