Pig-butchering scams build trust over time before steering victims to fake cryptocurrency investment platforms.
AI can help criminals scale convincing messages, but there is no reliable single detector that can verify an investment from a chat or image. Verify firms independently, avoid sending funds to strangers, and report suspected fraud through official channels.
The FBI describes “pig butchering” as a cryptocurrency investment scam in which fraudsters build trust through social or dating applications, then steer victims to fictitious investment platforms. Fake dashboards show growing balances to encourage more deposits; when victims try to withdraw, scammers demand taxes or fees and disappear. The FBI advises independently verifying investments, checking domains and apps, and reporting incidents to IC3. Criminals also use AI-generated text, voice, or video to make phishing and impersonation more convincing. An AI-generated image or fluent message does not prove a scam, and no single visual or language cue can reliably identify fraud. Conversely, a polished website or familiar voice does not prove an opportunity is legitimate. AI detection tools can produce false positives and false negatives; they should not be the sole basis for financial decisions. Use independent verification: contact the person through a known channel, check registrations and domains, and consult a trusted financial professional. Do not pay additional fees to unlock supposed crypto profits. Preserve messages, wallet addresses, transaction details, and platform URLs. Report suspected pig-butchering schemes to IC3 and relevant financial institutions. Victims should not be shamed; early reporting may help limit additional losses. A credible investigator will not require upfront payments to recover money, and victims should be wary of anyone promising guaranteed reimbursement. Contact financial institutions quickly if a transfer is recent.

Scammers will likely continue adapting generative tools for outreach and impersonation. Detection may combine platform behavior, payment signals, and user reports, but no detector can verify every opportunity. Public guidance should emphasize independent checking, safe reporting, and protecting victims from follow-on recovery scams. Explain what a tool can flag and retain human review for financial decisions. Measures should be updated as scam scripts, payment methods, and communication channels evolve. Confirm identities and investments through trusted channels directly and independently and promptly.
