Jin Dive
TOEFL iBT is an academic English proficiency test covering Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. ETS updated its structure in January 2026. Current Writing task types include Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion. Current Speaking tasks include Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview. Older materials with integrated speaking or writing tasks may not match the current test, so check the official test-content page and the date of each practice resource. AI can help create extra practice for these task types. It can generate sentence-building items, role-play an academic or campus interview, suggest an email outline and comment on whether an academic discussion response answers the prompt. Give it a task, time limit and scoring rubric, and try the response yourself before reading its suggestions. Ask for feedback on clarity, organization, grammar and vocabulary rather than a generic “grade.” For speaking, use actual audio prompts and record your answer when possible. A text transcript cannot measure pronunciation, intelligibility or pacing. Speech recognition can also mishear words, so compare the transcript with the recording. For writing, check that the draft meets the task purpose: a sentence must be grammatical, an email must include necessary information, and a discussion response should state and support a relevant opinion. Do not memorize generated answers or rely on the model to predict test questions. Use official ETS practice materials and scoring guides as the reference. Review where the AI’s feedback matches or conflicts with them, then focus on recurring errors. Follow test rules: ETS says writing-assistance software is not permitted during the test. AI belongs in preparation sessions outside the exam, not in a live test response.

The Future of TOEFL Prep with AI
Practice tools may better simulate the current task types and give feedback on repeated errors, but learners should verify it against ETS materials and official scoring guides. Keep practice dates and formats current, and confirm institution score requirements directly. Use AI for repetition, explanations and planning outside test conditions. Official sample tests and human feedback remain useful checks on whether practice transfers to the exam. Compare fresh attempts with earlier recordings and drafts. Confirm the scheduled test version before buying materials or planning timed practice.
Real-World imuse
A learner practices arranging words into a grammatical sentence, then asks AI to explain why the word order works.
A student drafts an email requesting a schedule change and uses a checklist for clarity, tone and required details.
A learner answers a simulated academic-discussion prompt, then checks whether the response states and supports an opinion.
A student practices Listen and Repeat from an audio prompt and then responds to an interview question, using the recording to review intelligibility and pace.

What is TOEFL Prep with AI?
AI can support TOEFL iBT preparation with practice prompts, draft feedback and structured speaking rehearsal. ETS updated the test in January 2026, so learners should match practice to the current tasks and treat any AI score estimate as unofficial.
Which tasks are in the current TOEFL iBT Speaking section?
ETS currently lists Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview for Speaking.
What should learners do with an AI-generated score conversion?
AI output is not an official ETS score, and score scales changed in 2026.
What changed in TOEFL score reporting in January 2026?
ETS says the updated scale reports section and overall scores from 1 to 6 in half-point steps.
Why should a learner use audio practice for Listen and Repeat?
The current task requires processing spoken input and producing speech.
What should a learner do before using older TOEFL practice material?
ETS updated task types in 2026, so older material may not reflect current practice.
