DeafBlind people use varied communication methods, including tactile sign, close-vision sign, Braille, print, speech, and assistive devices.
Refreshable Braille and accessible phone features can support communication, but needs and preferences differ. AI may help with specific text or speech tasks; it does not replace an individual’s chosen language, interpreter, or communication partner.
DeafBlindness includes a wide range of combined hearing and vision access needs. A person may use tactile sign language, ProTactile communication, deafblind manual, large print, speech, Braille, or several approaches depending on context. It is inaccurate to assume every DeafBlind person reads Braille or uses the same language or technology. Technology can connect a phone, computer, or service to a refreshable Braille display. Screen readers may expose interface text through speech or Braille, and users can enter text using a Braille keyboard or other access method. These tools can support messaging, reading, and online communication when the operating system, app, display, and user settings work together. Perkins and other specialist organizations describe Braille technologies and device workflows, but the right setup depends on the user. AI features such as speech recognition, text summarization, or image descriptions can sometimes provide additional information. They may be unavailable, inaccurate, inaccessible to a particular display, or unsuitable for private or high-stakes communication. Generated descriptions do not convey all visual context and should not be treated as an interpreter. Tactile language and human-guided communication remain essential for many people. An accessible design process should involve DeafBlind users directly, support customization, and work with the devices and communication forms they choose. Check privacy, network access, latency, refreshable display compatibility, and fallback methods. An AI feature is an optional aid, not a universal communication solution.
Better multimodal tools could offer more accessible ways to read, communicate, and understand surroundings, but development should be led by DeafBlind users and respect diverse languages and preferences. Future systems need reliable output through tactile and Braille interfaces, low-latency operation, and transparent privacy controls. AI-generated summaries or descriptions should remain reviewable and optional. Research should include people with different combined sensory access needs rather than treating DeafBlindness as one uniform user profile. Evaluation should also measure whether users can make corrections and retain control of what is shared.

A DeafBlind person uses tactile sign with a communication partner instead of an app for a nuanced conversation.
A user tests whether an image-description feature can be reviewed through their chosen screen-reader setup.
A support team checks Bluetooth, notifications, battery, and an offline communication backup with the user.

Communication methods and preferences differ among individuals.
A Braille display can provide tactile text access when compatible with the device and software.
Individual access needs and compatibility determine whether a tool is usable.
Automated descriptions are limited and cannot replace all communication.
Sensitive input may be processed or stored differently across products.
