Define the listening context. A short notification, a long lesson, and a telephone conversation have different needs. Playback devices, background noise, speaking rate, and listener language experience affect the result. Use a structured evaluation rather than one informal impression. Ask listeners to assess specified dimensions and record the procedure, sample selection, and uncertainty. Mean opinion scores only become interpretable when the listening conditions and rating method are known. Include difficult material: names, abbreviations, numbers, code-switching, emphasis, and long passages. Check consistency across segments and whether pauses or stress change the meaning. Automated metrics can help identify regressions but do not replace every listening judgment. Inspect the final export after any compression, mixing, or platform processing. Match loudness sensibly, avoid clipping, and retain an accessible transcript. A change that improves a laboratory score should still be tested in the environment where the audience will hear it.

Separate pleasantness from correctness
- Construct two clips of the same sentence. Clip A sounds natural but changes “fifteen” to “fifty”; clip B sounds less natural but says the correct number.
- Score intelligibility, semantic correctness, and naturalness separately.
- Choose according to the task’s requirements rather than averaging away a meaning-changing error.
