Hybrid retrieval combines lexical and vector-based search results for a query.

概要
BM25, dense retrievers and learned sparse methods produce different candidate rankings; rank fusion can combine those results without assuming that their raw scores share a scale.
Hybrid retrieval runs more than one retrieval method over the same query and combines or reranks the resulting candidates. Lexical methods such as BM25 are useful for matching terms; dense vector retrieval ranks by embedding similarity. Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF) combines documents by their positions in result lists rather than by raw scores, which may not be calibrated to one another. BEIR evaluates retrieval methods across heterogeneous zero-shot datasets and reports BM25 as a robust baseline; reranking and late-interaction methods perform well on average but incur higher computational cost. SPLADE is a learned sparse ranking model that uses explicit sparsity and learned term weights. These findings motivate testing candidate recall, final ranking quality, latency and cost on the target corpus; no retrieval combination guarantees a correct generated answer.
A retrieval system can combine exact-term search with vector similarity, then measure recall and ranking on its own query set.
A developer can compare BM25, dense and hybrid candidates on product codes and paraphrased questions.
RRF can fuse independently ranked result lists using rank position.
A learned sparse method such as SPLADE represents terms with learned weights while retaining sparse retrieval structure.
Retrieval systems can add reranking or learned sparse models to lexical/vector candidates, but selection should be based on task-specific evaluation. Track retrieval recall and ranking metrics separately from downstream answer correctness, latency and cost.

Hybrid retrieval combines lexical and vector-based search results for a query. BM25, dense retrievers and learned sparse methods produce different candidate rankings; rank fusion can combine those results without assuming that their raw scores share a scale.
