개요

Used well, these tools give OTs more time for hands-on treatment. Clinical reasoning about a person's daily activities, safety and goals stays with the therapist.

심층 분석

Occupational therapy helps people do the activities that matter to them, from dressing and cooking to school and work. AI is showing up in four areas of that work. Documentation is the most common use. Ambient scribes and note-drafting tools can turn dictation or session audio into SOAP notes and evaluation reports. OTs still have to show skilled service. Payers such as Medicare expect documentation to explain why a licensed therapist's expertise was needed, not just list what the client did. AI drafts often describe the activities and leave out that reasoning. The COAST goal-writing framework (client, occupation, assist level, specific condition, timeline) gives AI a useful template for occupation-based goals. Activity planning is where generative AI is strongest. It can brainstorm themed activities, grade tasks up or down, write visual schedules, and adapt instructions for clients with cognitive impairments. The OT decides whether an activity fits the client's goals and is safe. Assistive technology has taken up AI quickly. Apps such as Seeing AI and the AI feature in Be My Eyes describe scenes and read text for people with low vision. Voice assistants control lights and thermostats, and word prediction and speech-to-text help with writing. OTs judge whether a tool fits the client, set it up, train the client and follow up, including teaching when not to trust the tool. Home assessments can use phone photos, video walkthroughs and measurement apps to gather information remotely. AI can help turn the findings into a report and list possible modifications. Judging fall risk, transfer ability and what a caregiver can manage still requires watching the person in the space. Two misconceptions are common. The first is that AI can score standardized assessments from video. Validated scoring still requires administration by a trained professional. The second is that a measurement app is precise enough for every decision. For critical clearances, confirm with a tape measure.

The Future of AI for Occupational Therapists

AI will probably become more built into assistive technology, through smarter glasses, better speech recognition for unusual voices, and home devices that respond to everyday language. That makes the OT's role in matching tools to people and training safe use more important. Remote home assessments may improve as 3D scanning gets easier, but in-person observation will still matter for judging how someone actually moves. For documentation, the key question is whether the time saved goes back into treatment. Research on the outcomes of AI-supported OT is still at an early stage, so weigh claims carefully.

실제 구현

An outpatient hand therapist dictates her key findings after a session, and an AI scribe drafts a SOAP note. She corrects the grip strength values and adds her own assessment of functional change.

A school-based OT asks AI for ten fine motor activities built around the class's ocean-animals theme, graded from easy to hard for a second grader working on in-hand manipulation.

An OT sets up Microsoft Seeing AI for a client with low vision so it can read mail and identify products. She also teaches the client when to double-check a result with a sighted helper.

During a telehealth home assessment, an OT has a family member use a phone's measurement feature to capture doorway widths and toilet height. The OT makes the grab bar placement decision herself.

자주 묻는 질문

What is AI for Occupational Therapists?

AI for occupational therapists covers tools that help draft documentation, plan graded activities, support clients' assistive technology, and speed up home safety assessments. Used well, these tools give OTs more time for hands-on treatment. Clinical reasoning about a person's daily activities, safety and goals stays with the therapist.

What do payers such as Medicare expect OT documentation to show that AI drafts often leave out?

Payers expect documentation to show skilled service. AI drafts often describe activities without the clinical reasoning that justifies the therapist's involvement.

In the COAST goal-writing framework, what does the 'A' stand for?

COAST stands for client, occupation, assist level, specific condition and timeline. The assist level says how much help the client needs.

Which of these is AI-based assistive technology mentioned in the guide?

Seeing AI uses AI to describe scenes and read text for people with low vision. The other options are low-tech aids.

Why does the guide advise confirming critical measurements, such as wheelchair clearance, with a tape measure?

Phone measurement tools estimate distances and can be off by a centimeter or more. That is fine for planning but not for critical clearances.

Which risk of scene-description apps does the technical section highlight?

Vision-language models can produce confident but wrong descriptions. That is why the guide recommends teaching clients to double-check high-stakes items.
