Differential privacy bounds how an analysis’s output distribution changes between specified neighboring datasets.

Its parameters quantify privacy loss rather than promising that no information can ever be inferred about a person.
Differential privacy provides a formal definition of privacy: the output of an analysis should be almost the same whether or not any one individual is in the dataset. This is achieved by adding carefully calibrated random noise to results or computations, to bound differences in output distributions under the specified privacy parameters and neighboring-data definition. The strength is controlled by a parameter called epsilon (the 'privacy budget'): smaller epsilon means more noise and stronger privacy but lower accuracy. There are two main flavors. In the central model, a trusted curator holds raw data and adds noise to released answers. In the local model, each person's data is noised on their own device before it ever leaves, requiring no trusted central party but typically demanding more noise.
The U.S. Census Bureau used differential privacy in its 2020 Census Disclosure Avoidance System.
Apple researchers described local differential privacy for aggregate usage signals, including emoji statistics.
A research team evaluates DP-SGD to bound defined training-record influence while measuring model utility.
Google’s RAPPOR research used randomized reports for privacy-preserving aggregate statistics.
Teams should evaluate the complete mechanism, privacy unit, parameters, accounting, and implementation. Better tooling can help track composition and identify configuration errors, while utility tests show the cost of the chosen protection. Differential privacy can complement federated learning or secure computation, but these mechanisms address different parts of a system. Publication and deployment decisions should reflect the actual evaluated guarantee rather than an unspecified claim that a dataset is anonymous.

Epsilon quantifies the allowed privacy loss. A smaller value imposes a tighter bound; the associated noise and utility depend on the complete mechanism and settings.
Calibrated noise supports the stated distributional privacy bound under a specified neighboring-data relation. It does not promise zero inference under every condition.
