It must balance energy objectives with comfort, safety, and equipment constraints.
NIST’s AI-Optimized Building Controls project studies commercial heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. Its IBASIM simulation platform tests algorithms under different scenarios and compares them with baseline controllers. NIST also investigates agents that monitor equipment status and identify or diagnose faults. The Virtual Cybernetic Building Testbed combines commercial control hardware and software with a simulated building, enabling evaluation before wider field use. Berkeley Lab describes pre-cooling as changing when cooling demand occurs: building materials absorb and release heat, so cooling the structure before a peak period can shift later cooling demand. This does not guarantee lower total energy use, cost or emissions in every building. Controllers must respect comfort and equipment limits, and their performance should be monitored in the target building.
Predict heating or cooling demand from building telemetry.
Use a model to propose HVAC setpoints within approved limits.
Test control policies in a building testbed before field use.
Monitor comfort and energy metrics after deployment.
AI control may support building operations when validated and monitored. Do not deploy a new controller without commissioning, safety limits, and operator oversight.

AI building-energy management uses sensor data and control decisions to operate systems such as HVAC. It must balance energy objectives with comfort, safety, and equipment constraints.
NIST describes research on advanced control approaches for commercial HVAC systems. This does not imply HVAC is the largest load in every building.
Berkeley Lab describes pre-cooling as using building thermal mass to shift some cooling load away from peak periods. Outcomes depend on the building, weather, controls and comfort limits.
NIST describes testing and revising algorithms in IBASIM while comparing them with baseline controllers across scenarios.
NIST lists finding and diagnosing faults among the research goals. A diagnostic signal still needs evaluation; it is not a guarantee of preventing energy waste.
