Signed languages have their own grammar and include manual and non-manual information, so this is a language task rather than a universal gesture-to-word lookup.

Jin Dive

ASL and other signed languages are natural languages, distinct from simply gesturing the words of a spoken language. Handshape, movement, position, and non-manual features such as facial and body movements can carry linguistic information. Continuous signing includes transitions and coarticulation, so boundaries are not always explicit pauses. Research pipelines may use RGB video or extracted pose keypoints and may train recognition and translation components jointly. A gloss is a textual label for a sign used in annotation; a gloss sequence is not automatically a grammatical spoken-language translation. Camgoz and colleagues' 2018 work introduced PHOENIX-2014T using German Sign Language weather broadcasts and German text. Its language and domain do not establish performance for every signed language or everyday situation. Data coverage and community involvement matter for evaluation.

Research explores broader data coverage, different representations, and translation quality. Deaf communities and language experts help define the needs, cultural context, and evaluation of these tools. A narrow research demonstration should not be treated as a reliable replacement for an interpreter in every setting, and language-specific results require appropriately scoped assessment.

Kí ni AI nínú Ìtumọ̀ Èdè Àwọn Adití Lọ́nà?

Sign-language translation research maps signed-language video into another language's text or speech representation. Signed languages have their own grammar and include manual and non-manual information, so this is a language task rather than a universal gesture-to-word lookup.

Why does translating a signed language require more than a gesture-to-English-word lookup?

Signed languages such as ASL have distinct grammar and use spatial and non-manual information, so translation is a language task.

In a pose-based sign-language pipeline, what does keypoint extraction produce from video frames?

Keypoints are a visual representation for later processing, not an automatic translation or privacy guarantee.

Why does continuous sign-language recognition need to address temporal alignment?

Sequence modeling handles the relationship between visual observations and linguistic units over time.

What does involving Deaf communities and language experts add when designing sign-language AI tools?

The interdisciplinary perspective emphasizes relevant participants and expertise in defining and evaluating tools.
