It is decision support, not a substitute for a veterinary diagnosis.
A prospective diagnostic-accuracy study assessed AI software for canine cardiogenic pulmonary edema (CPE) from thoracic radiographs. It retrieved 500 consecutive radiographs made after hours in a veterinary emergency department; 481 were technically analyzable. The reference standard was interpretation by an ACVR-certified veterinary radiologist. The authors supported a screening role for this specific setting when a radiologist was unavailable, rather than a replacement for veterinary judgment. Separately, the RapidRead report describes development and deployment for canine and feline radiographs using more than 2.5 million images, with real-time performance evaluation and data-drift detection. These studies have different models and evaluation settings. Performance should be checked on representative animals, equipment and clinical conditions before relying on a model for an intended use.
Flag a radiograph for specialist review.
Compare a model with a veterinarian’s interpretation on a defined finding.
Check performance on the target species, view, equipment, and clinic.
Review uncertain outputs alongside the original image.
Use veterinary AI only within appropriate professional oversight and validate it for the intended clinical setting.

The 2022 study compared AI software with a veterinary radiologist for diagnosing canine cardiogenic pulmonary edema from thoracic radiographs.
The study retrieved consecutive canine thoracic radiographs made after hours in a veterinary emergency department; that setting matters when interpreting its results.
The study compared the software with an American College of Veterinary Radiology-certified radiologist’s interpretation.
The RapidRead report describes a system developed for canine and feline radiographs; it does not establish performance for every species.
