Microsoft's 2024 work uses graph communities and reports for collection-wide questions, with quality depending on extraction and source evidence.
Microsoft Research's 2024 GraphRAG work extracts entities, relationships, and descriptions from a document collection and groups graph nodes into communities, using methods such as Leiden. It creates community reports that can support broader questions about the collection. Local search combines information related to matched entities with relevant source context; global search aggregates information from community reports through a map-reduce-style process. These methods target different question scopes. They do not imply that vector retrieval can never answer broad questions or that GraphRAG universally improves every lookup. Extracted records and generated reports can contain errors or omit evidence, so check their support in the original material.
Testing collection-wide theme questions using community reports rather than only a few nearest chunks.
Combining entity information with source passages for a focused local query.
Inspecting extracted relationships against their underlying documents.
Comparing graph-based retrieval and simpler baselines for a particular corpus and question set.
Graph-based retrieval research explores hybrid search, updates, and more efficient indexing. Choose the representation and query strategy by measured results and costs for the intended corpus. Updating source documents can require refreshing derived entities, relationships, and reports; a stored graph should not be assumed current merely because it remains queryable.

Extraction builds source-derived structured records, which are merged and used for graph and report construction.
The strategies retrieve context at different scopes, and both depend on generation from that context.
