LLM-as-a-judge uses a language model to evaluate generated outputs against a task or rubric.

Research tests how well such judges agree with people and how presentation, length or model identity can affect their scores.
Research uses LLMs as evaluators for open-ended model outputs. G-Eval presents task criteria and uses a chain-of-thought plus form-filling procedure for text summarization and dialogue evaluation; in one reported setup, GPT-4’s scores reached a Spearman correlation of 0.514 with human judgments on summarization. MT-Bench and Chatbot Arena study agreement with human preferences and report over 80% agreement for GPT-4 in their evaluated settings. These are benchmark-specific results, not a universal guarantee of judge reliability. Other work identifies position, verbosity and self-enhancement biases.
A pointwise judge scores one answer against criteria; a pairwise judge compares two candidate responses.
A benchmark can swap answer order to measure position sensitivity.
An evaluation can compare judge scores with human judgments on a labeled sample.
A team can test for self-preference when the judge evaluates outputs from its own model.
Use LLM judges as one evaluation instrument alongside task-specific tests and human review. Report the judge model, rubric, sampling setup and benchmark; check agreement and bias on representative examples before relying on aggregate scores.
