Drift monitoring compares current inputs or outcomes with a reference.

It can flag distribution changes, but does not by itself establish model failure or its cause.
Data or input drift refers to a change in the input distribution; concept drift refers to a change in the relationship between inputs and the target. Input monitoring can provide an earlier signal when labels arrive later, but a distribution shift may be harmless and stable inputs can still accompany performance changes. PSI is one statistic for comparing binned distributions. Its value depends on binning and reference choice; common thresholds are conventions, not universal laws. NIST AI RMF recommends ongoing monitoring and risk management across a system lifecycle.
Track feature distributions against a documented reference period.
Use delayed labels to evaluate whether detected input changes affected performance.
Investigate a drift alert before retraining or changing a model.
Record metric definitions, bins, and thresholds with each report.
Monitoring should combine input, output, and labeled performance signals where available. Define alert thresholds for the task, investigate causes, and validate any retraining against a stable evaluation set.
