Microsoft Research’s NaturalSpeech papers explore neural text-to-speech, including codec-latent diffusion and factorized speech representations.

Each paper reports results for its stated data, models, and evaluation protocol; those findings do not guarantee equivalent performance in other settings.
NaturalSpeech (2022) reported human-level quality under its LJSpeech evaluation protocol. NaturalSpeech 2 uses a neural audio codec with residual vector quantization and diffusion to generate codec latents conditioned on text and a speech prompt, enabling zero-shot speech and singing experiments. NaturalSpeech 3 factorizes codec representations into content, prosody, timbre, and acoustic-detail subspaces and generates attributes with factorized diffusion. These are distinct versions and methods. Claims such as human-level quality or strong similarity refer to particular benchmark evaluations and should not be read as universal comparisons. High-quality voice synthesis also raises consent and impersonation concerns; deployment should follow applicable policy and obtain authorization for any speaker likeness or voice used.

Diffusion-based and factorized TTS may enable more natural and controllable speech, while capabilities and misuse risks depend on the model and deployment. The FTC documents fraud and impersonation risks from AI-enabled voice cloning and discusses interventions such as authentication, detection, and watermarking. NIST surveys provenance tracking and synthetic-content labeling methods, while noting technical limitations. These measures can support transparency but do not guarantee consent, authenticity, or prevention of misuse; deployment should include appropriate permission and abuse safeguards.

The claim is scoped to the paper’s LJSpeech evaluation and protocol, not a general result for every speaker or use case.
