The OpenAI Realtime API documents configurable server-based and semantic turn-detection modes; behavior depends on the selected mode and settings.
The OpenAI Realtime API describes VAD as automatically chunking audio and emitting speech-start and speech-stop events. Its server_vad mode segments based on periods of silence. It exposes an activation threshold from 0 to 1, prefix_padding_ms (audio included before detected speech) and silence_duration_ms (the silence interval used to detect speech stop). Its semantic_vad mode uses a semantic classifier based on the words in the utterance to estimate whether a person has finished speaking; an eagerness setting affects how long it waits. These settings and behaviors refer to the documented Realtime API modes, not every VAD algorithm.
Using server_vad to segment audio based on periods of silence.
Using semantic_vad to estimate whether the user has finished speaking from the words they have uttered.
Adjusting threshold, prefix padding and silence duration for a supported Realtime session.
Choosing eagerness to trade faster turn segmentation against allowing more time for a user to continue speaking.
Tune turn detection for the intended conversation or transcription workflow. Check the supported model/session configuration and monitor whether users are interrupted, speech onset is clipped or transcripts are chunked too early.

The Realtime VAD documentation says server_vad automatically chunks audio based on periods of silence.
The setting controls the silence duration used to detect a speech stop; shorter settings detect turns more quickly.
The Realtime VAD guide documents threshold as an activation value from 0 to 1.
The API guide says semantic_vad scores audio based on the probability, inferred from the words, that the user is done speaking.
