AI Tools for Students with Learning Differences
AI tools for students with learning differences, including text-to-speech, speech-to-text, summarizers, task organizers and writing supports, reduce barriers to reading, writing and organizing work for students with dyslexia, ADHD, dysgraphia and similar needs.

概述
They work best as accommodations that let students access grade-level content and show what they know, ideally chosen and documented through an IEP or 504 plan.
深入探讨
In US schools, supports for students with disabilities usually run through two frameworks. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), students who qualify for special education have an Individualized Education Program, and IEP teams must consider whether each child needs assistive technology. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act covers students whose disability substantially limits a major life activity, often through a 504 plan listing accommodations. The distinction between accommodations and modifications matters. An accommodation changes how a student learns or shows learning, such as listening to text instead of reading print. A modification changes what the student is expected to learn. Most AI supports are accommodations: they keep the goal and remove a barrier. Familiar tools include Microsoft Immersive Reader, which reads text aloud, highlights words, splits syllables and offers line focus; Texthelp Read&Write; accessible book libraries such as Learning Ally and Bookshare for readers with qualifying print disabilities; and built-in dictation in Google Docs and Microsoft Word. Generative AI adds summarizers, tools that break tasks into steps, and writing assistants that suggest structure. For dyslexia, text-to-speech lets students access grade-level ideas while they continue to build decoding skills. It is an access tool and does not replace structured reading instruction. For ADHD, the main value is executive function support: chunking tasks, estimating time and keeping a visible plan. Misconceptions run both ways. Using text-to-speech is not cheating when the goal is understanding content rather than decoding. But AI summaries can drop important details, and a writing assistant that rewrites whole paragraphs can hide what the student can actually do. Rules for which supports are allowed on state tests vary, so check before relying on a tool in class. Disability information is also sensitive and belongs out of consumer AI prompts.

The Future of AI Tools for Students with Learning Differences
Accessibility features such as reading aloud, dictation and live captions are increasingly built into operating systems and office software, which reduces the need for separate specialized tools and the stigma of using them. Generative AI is making task planning and writing support more flexible. The open questions are about evidence and fit: which supports improve learning for which students, and when support should fade. IEP teams will likely need clearer guidance on documenting AI tools and on which ones are permitted on assessments.
现实世界的实施
A ninth grader with dyslexia listens to a history chapter in Microsoft Immersive Reader while following synchronized highlighting, then answers the same comprehension questions as classmates.
A student with ADHD pastes an essay assignment into a task-breakdown tool such as Goblin.tools, which turns it into small steps she checks off one at a time.
A student with dysgraphia dictates his first draft using voice typing in Google Docs, then edits the text with the keyboard, spending his effort on ideas rather than handwriting.
An IEP team trials a text-to-speech tool for six weeks, compares assignment completion and comprehension scores with a baseline, and then writes the tool into the student's IEP.

常见问题
What is AI Tools for Students with Learning Differences?
AI tools for students with learning differences, including text-to-speech, speech-to-text, summarizers, task organizers and writing supports, reduce barriers to reading, writing and organizing work for students with dyslexia, ADHD, dysgraphia and similar needs. They work best as accommodations that let students access grade-level content and show what they know, ideally chosen and documented through an IEP or 504 plan.
What is the difference between an accommodation and a modification?
Accommodations keep the learning goal and remove a barrier, while modifications change the goal itself.
What does IDEA require of IEP teams regarding technology?
IDEA requires IEP teams to consider assistive technology needs for each child with an IEP.
Why might text-to-speech fail on a scanned worksheet?
A scan is a picture of text. OCR converts it into machine-readable text that a reader can speak.
How does the guide describe the role of text-to-speech for students with dyslexia?
Text-to-speech supports access to content but does not replace structured reading instruction.
Learning Ally and Bookshare primarily serve which students?
Both provide accessible books for readers with qualifying print disabilities.
