That makes it good at familiar story shapes: a character, a small problem, a few tries and a warm resolution. The quality depends on the details you provide. Useful prompt ingredients include the child's age, the length you want, the tone, characters and favorite things, a gentle theme, and things to avoid. For bedtime specifically, ask for calm, low-stakes events and a resolved ending rather than a cliffhanger. Repetition and a refrain work well for young children. Reading level can be controlled by specifying sentence length, vocabulary and a target grade; readability formulas such as Flesch-Kincaid can check whether the result fits. Privacy deserves care. Use a first name or nickname, and leave out surnames, school names, addresses and photos. Many general chatbots require users to be at least 13, and some require 18, so for young children an adult should run the tool. In the United States, COPPA (the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) sets rules for how online services collect personal information from children under 13. Children can still take part safely by making choices while the adult types and reviews. There are also misconceptions to avoid. AI stories are not automatically appropriate; they can include odd details, mildly scary elements, stereotypes or content that does not fit your family's values, so read before you read aloud. They can feel generic if you reuse the same prompt. And they complement, rather than replace, books by skilled authors and illustrators.
