For students

AI for students, used honestly.

Use AI as a tutor, not a ghostwriter: ask it to explain, quiz you and critique your drafts, then check every claim yourself and follow your school's rules on disclosure. This free path shows how, with real guides and quizzes.

Academic integrity

A simple test for what is allowed

Rules differ by school and even by assignment, so the first step is always the syllabus. When the policy is unclear, ask your instructor before you submit, not after.

  • Read the policy firstLook for an AI statement in the syllabus or assignment sheet. If there is none, email your instructor and keep the reply.
  • Learning help is usually fineExplaining a concept, generating practice questions or giving feedback on your own draft is a different act from submitting its writing as yours. Confirm it is allowed for that course.
  • Disclose what you usedIf AI shaped your work, say so in the way your course asks. Disclosure protects you far better than hoping nobody asks. How to cite AI
  • Keep your draftsNotes, outlines and version history show how your work came together, which matters if a detector or a person ever questions it.If you are accused

AI detectors are imperfect and can flag honest writing. Our guide on detectors explains what they can and cannot show.

Check the answers

Treat every answer as a claim to verify

Language models produce fluent text, which is not the same as true text. A few habits catch most problems.

  • Ask for sources, then open themChatbots can invent references that look real. Look each one up yourself before it goes in a bibliography.Spot fake citations
  • Cross-check the key factsFor any number, date or quote you will rely on, confirm it in a textbook, a primary source or a library database.Fact-check method
  • Be wary of agreeable answersModels tend to go along with the framing of your question. Ask it to argue the opposite side and see what changes. Why it agrees with you
  • Do the hard part yourselfIf AI does all the struggling, you skip the practice that builds the skill. Use it to get unstuck, not to skip the work.Cognitive offloading

Prompts

Prompts for studying, not shortcutting

Copy these into any AI assistant and swap the bracketed parts. They keep you doing the thinking.

  • Quiz me

Act as a tutor for [subject, level]. Ask me one question at a time on [topic]. Wait for my answer, tell me what I got right and wrong, then ask a harder one.

  • Explain, then test

Explain [concept] in plain language for someone who has never studied it. Then ask me three questions to check I understood, without giving the answers.

  • Critique my draft

Here is my own draft paragraph. Do not rewrite it. List the three weakest points in my argument and ask me a question about each.

  • Build a study plan

I have [number] days before an exam on [topics] and [hours] per day. Make a day-by-day plan with spaced review and a short self-test at the end of each day.

FAQ

Questions students ask

Is it cheating to use ChatGPT for school?
It depends on your school and the assignment. Using AI to explain ideas or quiz you is often allowed, while submitting its writing as your own usually is not. Read the syllabus, ask your instructor if it is unclear, and disclose any AI use the way your course asks.
How do I cite AI in an essay?
Major style guides now have formats for generative AI, and your instructor may add their own rules. Our guide walks through APA, MLA and Chicago. Never cite a source you have not opened yourself, because chatbots can invent references.
Why does AI give me wrong answers with total confidence?
Language models predict plausible text rather than looking facts up, so they can state errors fluently. This is called hallucination. Verify anything important against a reliable source.
Will an AI detector flag my own writing?
It can. Detectors give probabilities, not proof, and they sometimes flag honest work. Keep your notes and drafts, and see our guide on what to do if you are accused.
Is AI Understanding really free for students?
Yes. The guides, quizzes and the AI tutor are free. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. An optional paid certificate exists for people who want a verifiable credential, but you never need it to learn.
