Overzicht
General wellness scores are not the same as a medical-device function, and a notification is not necessarily a diagnosis. This guide explains how to interpret examples within their documented limits.
Diepe duik
A wrist wearable can combine optical pulse sensing, motion sensors, and software to estimate or classify patterns. The user sees an output such as a sleep score, readiness indicator, or irregular-rhythm notification, but the measurement and intended use differ by feature. Google says its sleep tracking and scores are for general wellness, not intended to diagnose or mitigate disease. It also notes that availability varies by device and region and some functions may require a subscription. Some smartwatch features have a specific medical-device status. FDA materials describe Apple’s AFib History feature as an over-the-counter software medical device for adults 22 and older with a diagnosed AFib condition; it analyzes pulse data from Apple Watch and provides a retrospective estimate of AFib burden. The FDA description does not make the feature a diagnosis, a replacement for ECG, or a general screening tool for every user. The regulatory status belongs to that specific feature and indication, not to every watch metric or algorithm. Interpret outputs as prompts within their stated scope. Check the product’s intended use, compatible device, age limits, required wear conditions, and instructions. A sensor reading can be affected by fit, movement, skin contact, and device differences. Discuss concerning or repeated symptoms with a qualified clinician; do not delay urgent care because a wearable did not send an alert. Keep wellness trends separate from medical decisions and ask the clinician how, if at all, to use them.

The Future of AI Health Features in Smartwatches
Wearables may add new estimates and alerts, but validation and indications remain feature-specific. FDA authorization records are periodically updated; vendors may change availability, device compatibility, or subscription conditions. Prefer validated outputs with clear intended use and human follow-up. New sensors do not turn wellness scores into diagnoses. New algorithms need evaluation on the people and conditions for which they are intended. Users should be told when a feature is not a medical device and when it is a cleared function. More metrics should not be mistaken for better evidence or clinical benefit.
Implementatie in de echte wereld
A user treats a Fitbit sleep score as a wellness trend, not a sleep-apnea diagnosis, consistent with Google’s help page.
An adult with diagnosed AFib reviews Apple Watch AFib History with a clinician within its stated age and indication limits.
A person notes that a loose band or vigorous movement may affect an optical sensor reading and follows device guidance to retest.
A user with chest pain seeks urgent care rather than waiting for a smartwatch rhythm notification.

What does a smartwatch PPG sensor measure?
PPG measures reflected light associated with blood-volume changes.
How should a general wellness sleep score be interpreted?
Google states its sleep features are for general wellness and not medical diagnosis.
What does FDA say about Apple Watch AFib History?
FDA’s description is limited to a defined indication and retrospective estimate.
Why can a wrist-based sleep-stage estimate differ from a sleep-lab assessment?
The guide distinguishes wrist sensor estimates from EEG measurement.
Which action is appropriate after a wearable repeatedly flags a concerning health pattern?
An alert is not a diagnosis; clinical questions need qualified follow-up.
