Overzicht

The title is not standardized, so candidates should compare the actual design, research and collaboration work in each posting and build evidence around human-centered AI experiences.

Diepe duik

AI-product UX work combines familiar design practice with questions about uncertainty, automation and user expectations. O*NET’s Web and Digital Interface Designers profile describes designing and testing interfaces, navigation and usability, while Google’s People + AI Guidebook offers design patterns for onboarding, explaining systems, balancing user control and supporting people when something goes wrong. These are useful references, not a single job specification for every AI UX designer. The work may include user research, information architecture, flows, prototypes, design systems, accessibility checks and collaboration with product managers, engineers, researchers and policy specialists. AI-specific questions include: when does the model add value; how should a person correct or override its output; what happens when it is wrong; how does the interface communicate capability limits; and what data is collected? A polished mockup alone does not show how people understand model behavior. Research plans and iterative testing help reveal mismatches between a system’s actual performance and user expectations. To prepare, build a portfolio case study that explains the user problem, constraints, alternatives, prototype, research method and what changed after testing. Show how you handled errors, accessibility and user control; do not claim that a single usability test proves universal benefit. Use real user data only with permission and remove sensitive information from public work. Job titles vary, so compare duties in postings and show how your design decisions connect to evidence and implementation. A portfolio can include a prototype, but explain why each interaction exists and which user need it addresses. Show alternate or empty states, loading delays, low-confidence output, corrections and error recovery. Describe how research changed the design and how engineering constraints affected what shipped.

Strategische impact

The Future of UX Design Careers for AI Products

AI interfaces may move beyond chat into agents, voice and multimodal workflows, creating new design questions about delegation, reversibility and feedback. Designers will still need to communicate uncertainty and make system behavior understandable. Tools and titles will change, so keep portfolio evidence focused on user needs, testable decisions and collaboration rather than one interface trend. Revisit accessibility and responsible-design guidance as standards evolve. Design practice can mature through close critique and iteration on real product constraints. Make your role in collaborative work explicit and document trade-offs you helped resolve. Keep learning from research and standards updates, then test whether a design pattern still fits the model and audience in front of you.

Implementatie in de echte wereld

A designer prototypes how an assistant communicates uncertainty before users rely on a generated answer.

A UX researcher tests whether people can correct a recommendation and understand what changes afterward.

A product designer maps an AI onboarding flow that explains capabilities, limitations and available controls.

A designer reviews keyboard navigation, contrast and screen-reader behavior in an AI chat interface.

  4. Identificeer één actiepad: carrière, beleid, financiering of vaardigheden – niet alleen bewustwording.
