AI can help a history student narrow a research question, outline an argument or identify places where a draft needs evidence.
The student must check every historical claim against reliable sources, distinguish primary from secondary material and write an analysis that reflects their own reading.
A history essay makes a claim about the past and supports it with evidence. AI can help a student brainstorm research questions, group notes into themes or test whether an outline follows a thesis. It may also suggest questions to ask of a document, such as who created it, for whom and under what circumstances. Those prompts can help organize research, but generated historical details and citations require independent verification. Start from the assignment and available evidence. Narrow the question to a period, place, group or event that can be investigated with appropriate sources. Read documents directly and record bibliographic details. A primary source offers evidence from the time or people being studied, but its perspective and purpose matter; it is not automatically a neutral account. Secondary scholarship can help establish context and historiography. Use each source for what it can support, and distinguish direct observation from inference. Build the essay around a specific thesis rather than a list of facts. For each paragraph, connect a claim to evidence and explain how the evidence supports the argument. A chatbot can flag a paragraph that lacks a citation or propose a counterargument, but it may invent quotations, misstate chronology or flatten disagreement among historians. Check quotations against the original and inspect a cited work before using it. If evidence complicates the thesis, revise the argument instead of asking the system to make the source agree. Follow course rules for AI assistance, citation style and permitted sources. Do not pass generated prose off as your own work, and acknowledge help where required. The student remains accountable for accuracy and interpretation. A strong essay lets readers trace its claims to evidence and see why the evidence supports a particular historical argument.
Research assistants may help students search archives, compare document metadata and organize notes with citations. Better systems could show the exact passages behind a summary and distinguish transcribed source text from generated explanation. Such tools may speed discovery, but transcription errors, selection bias and incomplete collections will still shape what a search returns. History education will continue to value independent source evaluation and transparent citation. Students should be able to explain who created a source, what it can reveal and how it supports an argument. AI can assist with organizing that work when the evidence remains visible and the writer checks each claim.
Ask for possible research questions about an assigned era, then choose one that can be answered with sources available through the library.
Have AI mark unsupported statements in an outline, then find primary documents or scholarship that actually support each claim.
Request alternative interpretations of a document, compare them with its context and explain which reading is better supported.
Use a tool to check whether a draft's paragraph order follows its thesis, while verifying dates, quotations and citations yourself.

An argument connects a defensible claim to evidence and explains the relationship.
Creator, audience and purpose help establish source perspective and limits.
Generated quotations and citations can be inaccurate and must be confirmed.
Corroboration compares accounts or records to assess what they support.
A sound argument accounts for evidence rather than forcing it to agree.
