AI can help explain an OBD-II trouble code and organize symptoms for a mechanic, but a code does not identify a failed part by itself.
Use the exact make, model, year, code, and symptoms, check the owner’s manual for warning guidance, and seek qualified diagnosis before replacing parts or driving an unsafe vehicle.

If you ask AI, include the exact code, symptoms, warning lights, recent work, and vehicle details; keep guesses separate from observations. Use the owner’s manual for the meaning of warning lights and manufacturer instructions. Do not replace parts solely because a code description names them. Do not clear codes before a technician has a chance to inspect the stored information. If steering or braking is impaired, smoke or fire appears, the vehicle overheats, or the vehicle feels unsafe, move to a safe location if possible and seek roadside or emergency assistance. Do not inspect hot, moving, or energized components. For electric and hybrid vehicles, avoid orange high-voltage components. The FTC recommends asking about diagnostic charges and requesting a written estimate before authorizing repairs; a second opinion can help when the proposed work is extensive. AI can help translate terms and prepare questions, but diagnosis requires tests and vehicle-specific expertise. It cannot confirm a repair is necessary, safe, or cost-effective from a code alone.

Vehicle assistants may get better at retrieving model-specific manuals and translating diagnostic terminology. More connected diagnostics could help organize service history, but data access and accuracy will depend on the vehicle and manufacturer. A code will still need confirmation through inspection and testing. Drivers should use manual warnings and safety symptoms to decide when to stop, and ask qualified technicians to verify repairs. AI is most useful for understanding a report, not authorizing a repair. Vehicle-specific manuals and service bulletins remain important.
