Most AI toys work like a small smart speaker in a friendly shell. A wake word or a button press starts recording. The audio is usually sent over Wi-Fi to the manufacturer's cloud, where speech recognition turns it into text, a language model or scripted dialogue system writes a reply, and text-to-speech speaks it back. Very little happens inside the toy itself, which is why a toy is only as safe as the company running its servers. The history shows the risks are real. Hello Barbie (2015) sent children's conversations to the cloud and drew heavy criticism from privacy advocates. In 2017 the CloudPets breach exposed stored voice messages recorded by children and parents, and Germany's telecoms regulator told parents to disable the My Friend Cayla doll, classing it as an illegal concealed surveillance device. In 2023 Amazon agreed to pay 25 million dollars to settle US Federal Trade Commission claims that it kept children's Alexa voice recordings too long. Newer toys built on large language models add a second risk: open-ended replies that can drift into inappropriate topics, invent facts, or encourage a child to keep talking. In the United States, COPPA requires companies collecting personal information from children under 13 to get verifiable parental consent and to let parents review and delete it. The UK's Age Appropriate Design Code and the EU's GDPR also give children's data extra protection. A common misconception is that a toy that is 'just for fun' collects nothing important. Voice recordings are biometric-like data and can reveal names, routines and family details. Another is that young children know the toy is not alive; many preschoolers attribute feelings to talking objects, so a toy that says 'I'll miss you' can create real emotional pull. Treat any talking AI toy as a connected device first and a toy second.

Major toy makers have announced partnerships with AI companies, so more mainstream toys with open-ended conversation are likely to reach shelves. That puts pressure on regulators to clarify how existing children's privacy laws apply to generative systems, and on companies to publish clearer safety testing. Researchers are still studying how regular conversation with AI companions affects language development and attachment in young children, and the evidence is thin so far. Until it matures, the most reliable protections remain parental controls, short data retention, supervised use and choosing toys from companies that disclose how they handle recordings.
