Algorithmic management uses software and data-driven procedures to perform supervisor functions such as assigning tasks, setting pay, monitoring performance, ranking workers, or restricting access to work.

Algorithmic management refers to the use of computer-programmed procedures to coordinate labor and supervise work. On ride-hailing and delivery platforms, an app can distribute tasks, set or present prices, monitor location, rate performance, recommend discipline, or deactivate an account. Similar systems also appear in logistics, healthcare, and conventional workplaces. The term describes management functions performed or supported by software; it does not by itself determine whether a worker is legally an employee or independent contractor. The app is often the worker’s main view of the system. A person may receive a task, accept or decline it, see a pay estimate, and later receive a rating or account restriction without knowing which data or rules shaped the result. Pay can vary with time, location, demand, estimated duration, and platform incentives. Workers may have limited opportunity to correct data or challenge an automated suspension. However, rules vary by platform and country, so a claim that declining tasks always reduces future offers would be too broad without evidence for that service. The International Labour Organization’s research on digital labor platforms describes effects on work organization, earnings, working time, privacy, and worker voice. Its reports also emphasize that worker experiences vary across online and location-based platforms. Algorithmic management may improve matching or coordination, while also intensifying monitoring and uncertainty. The design of appeal systems, transparency, and worker participation can affect how risks are distributed. A useful analysis maps the full work cycle: task assignment, pay calculation, performance measurement, access to preferred work, deactivation, and appeals. Ask which decisions are automated, which are advisory, what data are collected, and who can reverse an outcome. Examine worker contracts and local law separately from the technical description. When describing a platform, use its current published rules or worker evidence rather than assuming every app operates the same way.

Platform-work law remains jurisdiction-specific, and worker status depends on applicable statutory tests and facts. The ILO adopted Convention No. 193 in June 2026; it addresses algorithmic systems and review protections for platform workers, but binds only states that ratify it and must be implemented nationally. Track ratification and local implementation before treating its provisions as in force in a market. Reassess platform features after rule changes and account for workers’ appeal rights. Verify significant changes with local labor counsel. Review Convention No. 193 implementation status with the relevant labor authorities.
