HƯỚNG DẪN ứng dụng
Studying with ChatGPT without cheating means using the chatbot to quiz you, check your explanations and give feedback on your own work, rather than having it produce the work you submit.
It matters because the same tool can either deepen understanding or quietly replace the effort that creates learning, and many schools treat undisclosed AI-written work as academic misconduct.
Learning comes from effortful thinking: retrieving information from memory, explaining ideas, making and correcting mistakes. Research on retrieval practice, often called the testing effect, shows that recalling information strengthens memory more than rereading it. The risk with chatbots is that they remove exactly this effort by handing over finished answers. Evidence supports the concern. A field experiment with high school math students found that those given unrestricted access to a GPT-4 chatbot performed better on practice problems but worse on a later exam taken without it, while a version designed to give hints rather than answers largely avoided that harm. The lesson is about how the tool is used, not whether it is used. Three techniques keep you doing the thinking. Explain-back: teach the concept to the chatbot in your own words and ask it to find errors, similar to the Feynman technique. Quizzing: ask for questions one at a time and answer before seeing the solution. Feedback loops: submit your attempt, get targeted critique, revise yourself. Some chatbots now offer tutoring modes, such as ChatGPT's study mode, that ask guiding questions instead of giving answers, but you can get similar behavior by instructing any chatbot to act as a tutor that does not reveal answers. Honest use depends on your course. Policies vary from outright bans to permitted use with disclosure. Read the syllabus, ask the instructor if unclear, and never submit AI-generated text or solutions as your own unless explicitly allowed. Finally, chatbots make mistakes and can state them confidently. Check facts, formulas and citations against your textbook or lecture notes. A common misconception is that a fluent explanation is a correct one.

AI companies and schools are both building tutoring features that withhold answers and guide students through problems, and more course policies now specify when and how AI may be used. Research on learning outcomes is still early and mixed, so claims that chatbots reliably improve grades should be treated cautiously. Assessment is also shifting toward in-class work, oral explanations and drafts that show process. Students who build habits of using AI to test themselves, rather than to produce answers, are likely to be well prepared whatever the rules become.
A biology student explains the Krebs cycle in her own words, then asks ChatGPT to point out errors and gaps without rewriting the explanation for her.
Before a history exam, a student pastes his lecture notes and asks the chatbot to quiz him with one question at a time, waiting for his answer before revealing the correct one.
A student stuck on a calculus problem asks for a hint about the next step only, then tries again before requesting another hint.
A student writes her own essay draft and asks for feedback on the clarity of her argument, then checks her course policy and notes the AI feedback use in a disclosure statement if required.

Answering each question before seeing the answer forces retrieval, which is what builds memory.
Policies vary from bans to permitted use with disclosure, so the course syllabus and instructor are the authorities.
