Grounding connects generated answers to retrieved source material, and citations let a reader inspect which evidence is attached to a claim.

Research evaluates both the answer and the quality of its citation support.
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) combines a language model’s parametric knowledge with retrieved non-parametric source material. The original RAG paper evaluates models that retrieve passages from a dense index and condition generation on those passages. ALCE studies end-to-end systems that retrieve evidence and generate answers with citations; it evaluates fluency, correctness and citation quality. Citations improve verifiability only when they support the associated claims. A retrieved document can be irrelevant, incomplete or insufficient, so an application may choose to say the evidence is unavailable rather than guess; this is a design policy, not an automatic property of RAG.
Retrieving passages from a document collection before drafting an answer.
Attaching source passages to individual claims in a generated response.
Checking whether cited passages support the claims they accompany.
Evaluating answer quality and citation quality as separate properties.
Test grounded systems with task-matched questions and inspect errors in retrieval, answer correctness and citation support. Report which documents were indexed, which passages were retrieved and how citation quality was measured; do not treat a citation count as a reliability score.
