The source-filter model separates speech excitation from the acoustic shaping of the vocal tract.

WORLD is a vocoder that estimates and resynthesizes speech using fundamental frequency, a spectral envelope, and aperiodicity. These parameters can be edited separately in a signal-processing workflow, though edits do not guarantee that perceived speaker identity or naturalness remains unchanged.
In the source-filter model, a source represents voiced vocal-fold excitation or noise-like excitation for unvoiced sounds, and a filter represents resonances of the vocal tract. WORLD is a vocoder designed for high-quality speech synthesis and real-time applications. It estimates F0, the spectral envelope, and aperiodicity, then uses these features to synthesize speech. Its algorithms include DIO or Harvest for F0, CheapTrick for the spectral envelope, and D4C for aperiodicity. Keeping parameters separate allows controlled edits such as changing F0 while holding the envelope stream fixed, but synthesis artifacts and perceptual changes can still occur.

Hybrid speech systems can combine interpretable F0 and spectral features with neural waveform generation. WORLD remains useful for fast analysis, controllable synthesis, and research comparisons, while newer neural methods are often explored for perceived naturalness. Applications should evaluate artifacts, intelligibility, and speaker similarity after modifying parameters.

WORLD exposes F0 and spectral-envelope streams separately, so a system can edit one while keeping the other fixed; the perceived result is not guaranteed to preserve identity perfectly.
WORLD estimates explicit speech parameters and synthesizes from them, while neural vocoders learn waveform generation; quality and compute depend on the systems and use case.
