Recommender systems estimate which items may be useful to a user from interaction history, item attributes, or both.

A recommendation is a ranked prediction, not a guarantee of preference.
Google’s YouTube recommendation paper describes a two-stage design: candidate generation retrieves a manageable set from a large catalog, then a ranking model orders candidates for the viewer. Collaborative filtering uses user-item interaction patterns, whereas content-based approaches use item attributes. These methods address different information sources and can be combined. A recommender’s outputs depend on logged interactions, feature design and objective choice; the cited papers do not establish a universal architecture for every platform.
Collaborative filtering can use patterns in user-item interactions to suggest items associated with similar histories.
Content-based filtering can rank items using attributes similar to items in a user’s prior interests.
A candidate-generation stage can retrieve a shortlist before a separate ranking model orders it.
Offline evaluation can examine accuracy and ranking qualities such as diversity and NDCG; these metrics do not establish user benefit by themselves.
For a specific system, document the objective, candidate pool, ranking metrics and evaluation population. Test whether changes affect both relevance and other chosen list qualities. The cited sources establish particular models and evaluation concepts, not the current deployment details of commercial recommendation products.

Recommendation research treats diversity and novelty as separate ranking qualities alongside predictive accuracy; adding a diversity objective can reduce redundant results, but does not guarantee user satisfaction.
