Federated learning trains a shared model through participants’ local computations and aggregated updates while leaving their training records decentralized.

It reduces raw-data movement, but updates can still expose information unless additional protections are designed and evaluated.
In normal training, all data is pooled on central servers. Federated learning flips this: a global model is sent out to participants (phones, hospitals, banks), each trains locally on its own data, and only the resulting weight changes are sent back. The server averages these updates into an improved global model and repeats. Google researchers studied federated mobile-keyboard prediction using local training without exporting the training records to a server. The approach shines where data is private, regulated, or too large to move, such as healthcare records spread across hospitals. Challenges include unreliable devices, data that differs sharply between participants (non-IID data), and the fact that raw updates can still leak information, which is why it is paired with privacy techniques.

A hypothetical hospital collaboration keeps imaging records at each institution while evaluating model updates and their privacy risks.
A fraud-research collaboration compares federated training with centralized baselines without assuming that decentralization alone meets every privacy requirement.
A team applies secure aggregation so a server receives a combined update rather than each participant’s individual update.
