The original method warps features along time and masks blocks of frequency channels and time steps. The paper evaluates it with Listen, Attend and Spell models on LibriSpeech and Switchboard; reported gains are specific to those models, datasets, and training settings.
The SpecAugment paper applies augmentation directly to neural-network feature inputs (filter-bank coefficients), not by generating new audio recordings. Its policy includes time warping, frequency masking, and time masking. The authors apply it to LAS networks and report results on LibriSpeech 960h and Switchboard 300h. For LibriSpeech test-other, the paper reports 6.8% WER without a language model and 5.8% with shallow fusion; these values are historical experimental results, not expected outcomes for every recognizer.
Apply frequency masks to feature channels during ASR training.
Apply time masks to hide contiguous feature frames and test robustness to partial information loss.
Use time warping as the third transformation in the original SpecAugment policy.
Compare recognition results on the same benchmark with and without augmentation.
Feature masking remains a simple training option for speech recognition. Mask widths, counts, and warping strength should be tuned and evaluated for the dataset and model; results from LAS experiments do not guarantee equivalent gains on other architectures or audio tasks.

SpecAugment is presented as feature-input data augmentation. The authors evaluate recognition results on particular LAS tasks; a general improvement is not guaranteed.

SpecAugment samples mask widths and positions during training, so feature inputs can vary across passes. This creates stochastic augmentation but does not guarantee better generalization for every model.
