An anomaly is not automatically an error or threat.
Anomaly detection can be unsupervised or semi-supervised when labeled anomalies are rare. Point, contextual, and collective anomalies describe different patterns. NIST’s manufacturing-control report discusses behavioral anomaly detection as a security monitoring approach. The usefulness of a flag depends on context, threshold, and response process. An autoencoder anomaly method can use reconstruction error as a score, while Isolation Forest uses random partitions and short isolation paths. These are alternative scoring mechanisms; neither identifies a cause by itself. A high anomaly score may trigger investigation or another measurement, but it cannot guarantee an impending failure. A contextual anomaly is unusual relative to its context even if the same value may be ordinary elsewhere. Thresholds should be set and reviewed against representative reference data and operational costs.
Monitor industrial-control telemetry against a reference baseline.
Review contextual anomalies using time, location, or operating mode.
Set thresholds based on false-alarm and missed-event costs.
Investigate alerts before taking consequential action.
Anomaly detection is a monitoring component, not a standalone diagnosis. Validate alerts against domain review and update baselines with change control.

The cited study uses autoencoder reconstruction error as a score for assessing normality. A high score is an investigation signal, not a confirmed cause or defect label.
Isolation Forest randomly partitions data; unusual observations can be isolated in shorter paths. The score depends on the data and configuration and is not a causal diagnosis.
Ένα υπερβολικά ευαίσθητο όριο δημιουργεί πολλά ψευδώς θετικά, συντριπτικά τους αναλυτές. πολύ χαλαρό όριο χάνει πραγματικές ανωμαλίες.
An anomaly score can prompt inspection or further measurements. It does not prove a fault or guarantee advance warning of failure.
